University of the Third Age – Glen Eira

This U3A project was a collaborative process in which the design was assessed against key objectives and adapted to exceed the client’s brief while remaining in budget. Maintenance and running costs were reduced, and a modern light-filled open space provided flexibility for U3A’s changing curriculums.

The new centre was completed in 2009, and provides the senior community with spaces to come together and learn in a socially interactive environment. The building faces north, capturing warmth from the sun in winter, and is shaded via extended eaves in summer. Other ESD initiatives include double glazed windows throughout, openable high level windows for natural cross-flow ventilation, sustainable finishes such as bamboo, 100% recyclable carpet tiles and recycled timber decking, skylights and fluorescent lighting throughout, rainwater collection and water efficient fixtures. An energy recovery system was utilised as part of the fresh air supply to maintain comfortable temperatures with minimal energy use.
